4 Things You Need to Host Your Own Escape Room

  1. A Plan. You’ll need to create the actual escape room. Good news: we’ve created some escape rooms and are sharing more rooms all the time here with you. Just check out what we’ve created, and feel free to utilize this as you host your own escape room. You can add new pieces or remove pieces which you don’t want. And the rooms we make are created to be used again and again. This means the puzzles in them are not “one and done.” The puzzles can be reworked so that the same or a new audience still has to work through the puzzle.

  2. An Invitation. Every good party needs an invitation. This goes for your escape room party. We’ve designed some escape room invitations, and you are free to use them. The best thing to do is download the main image, then edit it straight from your smartphone. Your smartphone can add text to images, so add the place (address), date, and time of your escape room, and then send the invitation out to your friends.

  3. A Music Playlist. We’ve curated escape room music playlists for you. When you host your own DIY escape room, you’ve put in a lot of time and effort. Make sure you have a good escape room playlist playing music in the background. Check out the playlists we’ve made on Spotify covering every escape room theme imaginable, and just press play!

  4. An Amazing Moderator. You’ve sent out the escape room invitations, found an awesome playlist, and set up the escape room. Now make sure you’re ready! As the moderator, you are the host. Sometimes, you’ll be playing a part in the room. For example, if you’re hosting a Sherlock Holmes escape room, you might be a detective from Scotland Yard asking for help and giving the basic information that you know. You might host a prison break escape room and could be an officer or guard that the players have to bribe as you act the part. If you’re hosting a spy escape room, like Cold War, then you might represent an agent who gives the initial information. Then when players have a question or need a hint, you can guide them in the right direction. – Keep in mind that asking a question of your own to lead the players in the right direction sometimes is better than simply giving an answer. Having that “aha” moment in a game is really fulfilling as a player, so try to keep that possibility open to the players.
